
Falcon Leads Roadrunners Past Thunder

EDINBURG, Texas-Ryan Falcon allowed one run and struck out 10 batters in six innings leading the Edinburg Roadrunners to a 7-4 win over the McAllen Thunder Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Falcon (1-0) earned his first win of the season while scattering five hits and did not walk a single batter.
The Roadrunners (27-43) got the early lead in the bottom of the first against J.T. Zink (1-4). Antonio De Jesus reached on an error and then moved to second after a stolen base. Stantrel Smith then followed with a single that put runners on the corners. R.J. Harris then hit an RBI ground out that allowed De Jesus to score from third. C.J. Beatty hit an RBI single to left field that drove in Smith from second. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Jonathan Fernandez was hit by a pitch that allowed Beatty to score. Brandon Wilkerson put a cap on the scoring with an RBI single to left field scoring Robert Matlock to score making it 4-0 Edinburg.
McAllen (28-42) got on the scoreboard in the top of the third with an RBI single by Antoin Gray that allowed Andrew Kuhn to score cutting the Roadrunners lead 4-1.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Matlock hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Smith to score from third. Fernandez then walked with the bases loaded driving in Harris from third extending the lead to 6-1.
The Thunder added some runs in the top of the eighth. Zach Mandelblatt delivered an RBI single that allowed Wilson Batista to score from second. After a walk loaded the bases, Eric Eiland drove in Brian Nichols with a walk. Mike Goss then followed with an RBI fielder's choice that made it 6-4 Edinburg.
Smith led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk and then stole his fourth base of the game. After moving to third on a ground out, Smith scored on a passed ball adding an insurance run making it 7-4.
Mike Schurz then came in and pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season giving Edinburg the 7-4 victory.
The Roadrunners and Thunder will play game two of their four-game series Tuesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Toro Trevino (4-4) is expected to face Kurt Houck (3-7) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
