Waterloo, Iowa - The United States National Junior Team participating in the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships could have its largest contingent of former Waterloo Black Hawks in five seasons, based on USA Hockey's preliminary roster announcement on Wednesday.

Defensemen Mikey Anderson and Dylan Samberg would both be making second trips to the competition if they are on the final U.S. roster to be revealed later this month. Forward Jack Drury - who skated for the Hawks last winter - is the third Waterloo alum on the short list for this year's team.

The 29 players named by USA Hockey on Wednesday will meet in Everett, Washington, for training camp from December 15th to 17th. There, and during a pair of pre-tournament exhibitions which follow, the group will be winnowed down to 23. The 2019 World Junior Championships will be in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia from December 26th through January 5th.

If Anderson, Drury, and Samberg each claim a place on the team, it will be the third time three former Hawks have made the squad in the same year. The most recent instance was in 2014 when Vinnie Hinostroza, Ian McCoshen, and Zach Stepan all represented the United States. Coincidentially, Anderson and Samberg are seeking to become the first Black Hawks since McCoshen to skate twice for the U.S. in the World Junior Championships. McCoshen did it in 2014 and 2015. Last year, Anderson and Samberg helped the U.S. to a bronze medal finish.

Anderson, Drury, and Samberg were Waterloo teammates together during the 2016/17 season. Currently, Anderson and Samberg are sophomores, both skating for the defending NCAA champion Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Drury spent 2017/18 as the Black Hawks' captain, leading Waterloo to the Anderson Cup, and is now a freshman at Harvard. All three are NHL Draft Picks (Samberg, 2017-2nd Round, Winnipeg Jets; Anderson, 2017-4th Round, L.A. Kings; Drury, 2018-2nd Round, Carolina Hurricanes).

Pool play at the 2019 World Junior Championship will include games against Kazakhstan, Finland, Slovakia and Sweden. Former Omaha Lancers Head Coach Mike Hastings will lead this year's National Junior Team.
