Black Bears Sweep Spikes in First Home Series

Granville, WV - The postgame pyrotechnics weren't the only fireworks for Black Bears fans at Monongalia County Ballpark, as a dazzling offensive performance helped West Virginia defeat the State College Spikes 9-5.

The win completed the Black Bear's sweep of the State College in the opening series at Monongalia County Ballpark. It also marked the team's fifth straight victory, giving them a 5-4 record.

In the early going, the Spikes got off to a hot start. After scoring first on an RBI fielder's choice in the second inning, State College got four more runs in the top of the fourth to take an early 5-0 lead.

Facing an early deficit, the Black Bears came out of hibernation in a big way in the bottom of that same inning. With two runners on base, 1B Luke Mangieri popped an RBI double into shallow left field to score the West Virginia's first run of the ballgame.

DH Jhoan Herrera followed up immediately with a 2-RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Then in the bottom of the fifth, 2018 Pirates' first round pick CF Travis Swaggerty drove in his first professional RBI on a single to right-center field. He finished the game hitting 3-4 with one RBI, coming around to score three times.

Herrera drove home his third run of the game soon after with another single to tie the game at 5-5. Immediately following him was 3B Nick Valaika, who looped a double to center field to give West Virginia a two-run lead

Once again, the bullpen played a huge role in the Black Bears' win. In the seventh inning, P John Pomeroy gave an impressive performance headlined by three quick strikeouts.

To make matters worse for the Spikes, DH Jhoan Herrera wasn't done at the dish. With a runner on second, the left-handed hitter hit a laser over the right field fence to bolster his team's lead to 9-5.

Herrera was the man of the night for West Virginia, going 3-4 with five RBIs to lead the way for the home team.

In the final two innings, the Black Bears looked to P Logan Stoelke to complete the sweep in front of the home crowd. The righty did just that, pitching a pair of scoreless innings without giving up a hit.

Riding a wave of momentum, West Virginia heads on the road to play a three-game series against the Auburn Doubledays. First pitch for tomorrow's contest is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
