Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY- The Hudson Valley Renegades used stellar pitching and took advantage of eight walks and four Vermont Lake Monsters errors in an 11-0 win Saturday night at Dutchess Stadium to complete a sweep of the three-game series. It was Hudson Valley's fourth win in a row as they scored the 11 runs on only six hits.

The Renegades got on the board in the first inning thanks to an unearned run. With runners at first and second with one out, catcher Chris Betts hit a comebacker to the mound. Trying to start a double play at second, Vermont starting pitcher Adam Reuss airmailed the ball into centerfield for a throwing error. Hudson Valley centerfielder Michael Smith scored from second on the play to put the Renegades up 1-0.

Things stayed that way until the third when shortstop Tyler Frank belted his first homerun of the year, a solo shot over the leftfield wall, to up Hudson Valley's lead to 2-0. The Renegades would pad their lead in the fifth thanks to a two-out RBI single from Betts, which scored Smith from second.

More sloppy play from the Lake Monsters allowed Hudson Valley to add two more runs in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Three walks and a fielding error did the trick as one of the walks from reliever Brandon Marsonek forced in a run. Later fellow reliever Jeferson Mejia uncorked a wild pitch to score another run and give the Renegades a 5-0 lead.

The bottom would fall out for Vermont in the seventh as the Renegades scored six runs on only two hits. There were two errors, three walks and a wild pitch in the frame. Of the six runs only two of them were earned. Third baseman Adrian Rondon had an RBI groundout, designated hitter Allen Smoot drew a bases-loaded walk, and a wild pitch by Mejia scored another run. The final blow came with runners at second and third with one out as leftfielder Bryce Brown sent a sinking line drive into centerfield. The ball fell in for a hit, then caromed off the glove of Vermont centerfielder Jeramiah McCray before rolling to the wall. Brown motored around the bases to give Hudson Valley an 11-0 lead.

Brown finished the night 2-4 with an RBI and run scored. In addition to his homer, Frank also had a single and two runs scored. Vermont was held to only four hits on the night.

On the mound, the Renegades were led by starting pitcher Nick Padilla (1-1) who cruised to victory after allowing only two hits over five shutout innings. Reliever Trey Cumbie was strong in striking out six batters over three frames. Fellow reliever Andrew Gist capped the game by tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a strikeout.

The loss went to Reuss (0-1) who allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in 3.2 innings.

The Renegades' six-game homestand continues tomorrow when they welcome the Connecticut Tigers to Dutchess Stadium. First-pitch is slated for 5:05. Southpaw Blake Pflughaupt (0-0, 0.00 ERA) against righty Carlos Guzman (0-0, 9.00 ERA) for the Tigers.
