Montgomery Biscuits News Release
BILOXI, Mis. - The Shuckers (15-28) made it interesting late, but the Biscuits (18-24) ultimately hung on to a much-needed win, taking down South Division foes Biloxi, 4-3, in Wednesday night's series opener at MGM Park, snapping a four-game losing skid in the process.
Right-hander Peyton Battenfield (2-0) made his second start for the Biscuits against the lefty Nick Bennett (1-3), who struck out the side in the first. Battenfield countered with a scoreless first of his own, striking out one, and then struck out the side in the second.
Both pitchers took shutouts into the fifth, with Bennett retiring the first two batters of the fifth via the strikeout before allowing a two-out single to Michael Smith. Next, Bennett walked Garrett Whitley and Xavier Edwards and was removed for Matt Hardy. Miles Mastrobuoni then came to the plate with the bases loaded and lined a two-out, two-run single into left to get the Biscuits on the board at 2-0.
Battenfield continued to pitch well, going 5.2 scoreless innings before handing things over to Dalton Moats, who, with a runner at third, induced a fly ball to center off the bat of Tyler Friis, on which Smith made a terrific sliding catch to end the sixth with the lead still intact.
Moats worked a scoreless inning and then Joel Peguero came on and worked 1.1 scoreless frames to preserve the shutout. Rene Pinto crushed his sixth home run of the season off the batter's eye in straightaway center in the ninth, and Smith followed that up with an RBI-triple to pad the Biscuit lead to 4-0.
The Shuckers started a comeback in the bottom of the ninth when Tristen Lutz and Tyler Friis led off the inning with back-to-back singles against Brian Shaffer, before Luis Castro clobbered a three-run homer to left to ruin the shutout and pull Biloxi within a run at 4-3. Shaffer was then removed for Alex Valverde, who ultimately closed things out for the righty's first Double-A save.
The Biscuits will try to make it back-to-back victories against the Shuckers on Thursday when Tobias Myers (2-3) faces Jesus Castillo (0-1) at 6:35 PM CT.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for a six-game series against the Mississippi Braves on a Golden Biscuits Tuesday on June 29. The rest of the series will include Left Handers Day & Military Wednesday presented by WOW! on June 30; A Summer Tank Top Giveaway by ALFA Insurance on Thursday, July 1; A Sleeve Cooler Giveaway presented by 95.1 The Fox on Friday, July 2; Patriotic Night with MAX Fireworks on Saturday, July 3; And an Independence Day Celebration with MAX Fireworks on Sunday, July 4.
