Mississippi Braves News Release

PEARL, MS - Nolan Kingham (W, 5-1) hasn't given up a run over his last 25 innings. The right-hander out of Texas made his league-leading ninth start on Wednesday and tossed 7.1 shutout innings to earn his fifth win and help the Mississippi Braves to a 3-0 victory over the Tennessee Smokies at Trustmark Park.

Kingham's last run allowed was in the first inning of his start on June 6 at Pensacola. Since that one-run outing, he's delivered three scoreless starts over 22 innings with two walks and 17 strikeouts, pitching into the eighth inning twice.

The M-Braves (26-18) offense sputtered on Tuesday in a 2-0 loss, and it looked rough after stranding the bases loaded with one out in the second inning. But Braden Shewmake came up big in the third inning with a two-run double to left with the bases loaded, scoring Wendell Rijo and Shea Langeliers, giving the Braves a 2-0 lead. The double from Shewmake came after he had tripled in the second. Trey Harris followed with a sacrifice fly to score CJ Alexander, and it was 3-0.

That was more than enough for Kingham, who scattered five hits and two walks throughout the 91-pitch outing. The Las Vegas native retired the first batter of the eighth inning, before issuing his second walk. Kingham was lifted for Emmanuel Ramirez (S, 1). The 26-year-old right-hander would strike out one and walked one over the next 1.1 innings to seal the combined shutout.

The M-Braves pitching staff entered Wednesday's game with a 3.41 ERA, good enough for eighth-best in minor league baseball. The starting rotation had a 2.90 ERA, which is good enough for third-best in the minors. Kingham leads the league with 55 innings pitched and is tied for the league lead with five wins. His 2.29 ERA is sixth-best.

Shewmake led the offense finishing 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits and two RBI. The first-rounder out of Texas A&M has six extra-base hits in his last ten games. The M-Braves saddled Tennessee (15-27) starter, Cam Sanders, with his third loss of the season. The former LSU Tiger struck out five and walked five, giving up three runs on two hits over 5.0 innings.

The M-Braves have won six of seven and are 23-6 since May 27, moving back to eight games over .500 and one game behind Pensacola in the division.

Thursday night the M-Brave send RHP Spencer Strider to the mound for his Double-A debut. The fourth-round selection out of Clemson in 2020 had 56 strikeouts over 30 innings in Single-A prior to his promotion. RHP Erich Uelmen (1-4, 4.91) will oppose Strider for the Smokies. The first pitch is set for 6:35 pm with coverage on 103.9 WYAB, mississippibraves.com, and MiLB.tv.
