Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla - The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (35-22) held a 7-0 lead going into the sixth inning, but the Biscuits (28-29) had an offensive explosion featuring nine unanswered runs to close the series with a 9-7 victory.
Anthony Molina struggled early in his 11th start of the season, allowing a three-run home run to Troy Johnston to make the score 3-0 for Pensacola. Despite allowing the early 3-0 lead, the righty settled in and held the Blue Wahoos scoreless for the rest of his time on the mound.
On the other side, Johnny Cueto kept Montgomery under control in his rehab start, allowing only four hits and no runs in 2.2 innings pitched. Noah Gostis and Luis Palacios continued the dominant pitching trend until the Biscuits finally broke through in the sixth.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jan Mercado extended the Blue Wahoos lead by hitting a grand slam behind left field. However, the Biscuits began chipping away at the deficit in the next frame with a home run from Junior Caminero and an RBI-groundout by Heriberto Hernandez.
A sacrifice fly from Caminero and an RBI-double from Mason Auer put Montgomery back in the game with the score now 7-4 in the seventh. Auer now has the longest hit-streak by any Biscuit this season at 10 games, while also extending his on-base streak to 13 games.
The deficit was cut down to just two runs in the eighth following a solo-homer from Diego Infante. Not long after, Dylan Bice (1-2) loaded the bases with one out before being relieved by Austin Roberts. Immediately following the pitching change, Austin Shenton put the Biscuits in the lead with a grand slam, making it nine unanswered runs for the butter and blue.
The Blue Wahoos were unable to put together a rally as Nelson Alvarez (3-0) and Enmanuel Mejia played nearly perfect baseball, with only one runner reaching base on a walk during their appearances on the mound.
Despite losing the series, Montgomery capped it off with the largest comeback win of the season and now moves back into third place in the South Division with another big series coming up.
The Biscuits return to Riverwalk Stadium on Tuesday, June 13 to play the Biloxi Shuckers in a six-game series. Patrick Wicklander (1-0) will make his first Double-A start on the mound for Montgomery.
The series will include a Hawaiian Shirt Giveaway presented by RTJ at Capitol Hill on Thirsty Thursday, June 15; Ladies Night on Friday, June 16; Outdoors Night presented by Outdoor Alabama feat. Specialty Jerseys and Max Fireworks on Saturday, June 17th; and a Father's Day Pint Glass Giveaway presented by Common Bond Brewers and Bark in the Park on Sunday, June 18th.
