Montgomery Biscuits News Release

BILOXI, Mis. - The Biscuits won their first series of the second half winning a hard-fought game on Sunday night over the Biloxi Shuckers by a score of 5-3 at MGM Park.

Chris Kirsch was on the mound for the Biscuits and the left-hander was terrific matching a season-high with seven strikeouts through the first 3.1 innings of work. The southpaw got some run support from the Montgomery offense in second as well when Cade Gotta plated a pair on a base hit up the middle off Biloxi starter Jorge Ortega. A Jacob Nottingham throwing error brought home the third Biscuits run of the inning as they led 3-0.

The Shuckers couldn't crack Kirsch until the fifth when Garrett Cooper delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to one. An inning later, Angel Ortega added an RBI-single to tie the game at three.

The game would hinge on the next pitch, however, as Kirsch was removed in favor of Jeff Ames. Johnny Davis stepped up and drove the first pitch he saw from the right-hander into medium deep center. Biscuit center fielder Braxton Lee settled under it to make the catch, and then unleashed a rocket toward home to nail a tagging Chris McFarland at the plate who was tagged out by Jake DePew for the inning-ending, momentum-swinging double play.

The game remained tied until the ninth when Jake Bauers led off with a single, the first Biscuit hit since the second. Bauers would steal second and reach third on another Nottingham throwing error, before finally scoring on a drag bunt by Kean Wong to put the Biscuits ahead 4-3. A sac fly by Cade Gotta extended that lead to 5-3, and Kyle Winkler closed things out in the bottom of the ninth for his third save of the season.

The Biscuits will try to make it four out of five to begin the second half on Monday night with Yonny Chirinos making his Double-A debut for the Biscuits against Brandon Woodruff (2-4) at 7:10 PM.
