Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears erased a five run deficit to force extra-innings before ultimately falling to the Birmingham Barons by a final of 7-6 in 11 innings on Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. With the loss, Mobile (1-2, 33-40) has failed to win a game in which they have trailed by more than two runs this season, while Birmingham (2-1, 31-42) improved to 4-0 in extra innings in 2016.
The Barons broke the 6-6 tie on a sacrifice fly from Jake Peter that allowed Eddy Alvarez to score from third in the top of the 11th inning to give Birmingham the 7-6 lead and eventual victory.
In the top of the third inning, the Barons record four straight hits, including a three-run double from catcher, Sean O'Connell that gave Birmingham a 3-0 advantage. After Mobile posted a run in the bottom of the third inning, the Barons pulled out to a 6-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Mobile scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the score at 6-6 but the BayBears couldn't complete the comeback, going just 4-for-18 with runners in scoring position while leaving 10 men on base. Second baseman, Jamie Westbrook and Designated Hitter, Rudy Flores combined to go 6-for-10 at the plate, accounting for three of the BayBears runs Saturday night.
The BayBears and Barons continue their five game series in Mobile with game four on Sunday scheduled for 5:05 PM. Gates at Hank Aaron Stadium open up at 4:00 PM. The series runs through Monday, June 27th. Fans can purchase tickets to the current homestand at Hank Aaron Stadium or any of the BayBears remaining 32 home games.
