BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Biscuits (74-42) tallied season highs in hits (18) and runs (13) en route to their largest win of the season-13-1-over the Birmingham Barons (50-62) in game one of their five-game series on Wednesday night at Regions Field.
Matt Krook, who was activated from the seven-day injured list before the game, opened for the Biscuits for the 15th time this season and pitched well, going two scoreless innings, and allowing just a single, a walk, and notching three strikeouts before handing things over to Brian Shaffer (3-2).
The Biscuits struck first against Birmingham start Lincoln Henzman (2-6) courtesy of a Josh Lowe RBI-single to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, David Rodriguez grounded into a 5-4-3 double play with the bases loaded to double that lead to 2-0.
In the third, the Biscuits ripped three more hits off Henzman, including an RBI-single by Tristan Gray to push the Montgomery advantage to 3-0. A throwing error by Barons catcher Nate Nolan in the same inning put the Butter and Blue ahead 4-0.
Shaffer retired the first 10 batters he faced, striking out five of them, and the Biscuits added to their lead in the sixth courtesy of a pair of bases-loaded walks to Lucius Fox and Vidal Brujan and then a Taylor Walls sac fly that made it a 7-0 ballgame. Shaffer ended up going five scoreless innings and served up just one hit while walking another, and striking out six.
After a 25-minute rain delay in the sixth, the Biscuits added two more runs to take a 9-0 lead on another Nolan throwing error and a Brett Sullivan sac fly. In the seventh, Miles Mastrobuoni, who tied Sullivan by extending his hitting streak to a team-leading 12 games with a sixth-inning single, launched his fourth home run of the season to make it 10-0, and Walls then knocked in the Biscuits' 11th run on a fielder's choice.
Lowe led off the top of the eighth with his 14
thhome run of the season to make it 12-0, and Carl Chester tied a team season-high with his fourth single of the game in the same frame. The Barons finally got on the board and spoiled the shutout on Blake Rutherford's RBI-single in the eighth off Ivan Pelaez. Sullivan then added the 18th hit of the night on an RBI-single in the ninth.
The Biscuits will try to make it three in a row on Thursday when Josh Fleming (11-4) takes on Matt Tomshaw (5-5) at 7:05 PM CT.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for a five-game home stand against the Biloxi Shuckers beginning on Sunday, August 18 for Big Mo's Sweet 16 Mascot Mania. The rest of the home stand will include a Military Card Set Giveaway presented by Golden Corral on Wednesday, August 21 and Wrestling Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway on Thursday, August 22.
