Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds nearly mounted a late comeback but were unable to rev the engines quick enough after a slow start, losing to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 7-5 on Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field.
The Shorebirds (16-30) saw the Pelicans (33-13) get on the board first in the second inning.
BJ Murray singled and Jacob Wetzel doubled to start the frame for the Pelicans, putting two in scoring position. Murray scored on a groundout before Wetzel dodged a tag at the plate to score on a fielder's choice. Ezequiel Pagan capped the frame with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
The game stayed at a 3-0 line until the sixth. Luis Valdez walked to start the inning for the Shorebirds and Elio Prado then singled. Two outs later, Noelberth Romero singled home Valdez, moving Prado to third. Prado then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.
Myrtle Beach got immediate breathing room in the bottom of the inning as Kevin Alcantara blasted a solo homer, his sixth of the season, to make it 4-2.
The Pelicans plated three in the seventh to further extend their lead, loading the bases with nobody out before a wild pitch, sacrifice fly, and Murray single made it 7-2.
With two on and two out in the ninth, the 'Birds started their comeback. Valdez reached on an error that was further compounded by a throwing error, allowing two runs to score with Valdez going to second. Prado then drove in Valdez to make it 7-5, but that was as close as the 'Birds got.
Luis Devers (5-3) worked five shutout innings for the Pelicans to get the win. He struck out six and walked one, allowing three hits.
Shane Davis (1-5) threw well, but suffered the defeat for Delmarva, allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings, giving up six hits and a walk, striking out six.
The Shorebirds continue their series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Wednesday, June 1. Carter Baumler (0-0, 0.00) is slated to go for the Shorebirds while Myrtle Beach counters with Tyler Schlaffer (0-3, 5.17). First pitch from TicketReturn.Com field is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
