Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (4-2) scored three runs in a dramatic ninth-inning comeback to defeat the Lincoln Saltdogs (1-5) by a score of 5-4, completing a three-game sweep on Sunday night at Haymarket Park. The win moves the Canaries into a first-place tie with the Sioux City Explorers in the second-half standings.
The Saltdogs took the lead in the first inning. The bases were loaded on a single by Josh Burrus, a base hit by Shea McFeely, and a walk to Phil Hawke. With the bases loaded against him, Canaries starting pitcher Ryan Ford got Pichi Balet to ground into a double play. Burrus scored on the play for a 1-0 Lincoln lead. Shawn McGill walked to put runners on the corners for Steven Alexander. Alexander doubled up the right field line to score McFeely for a 2-0 advantage. McGill tried to score on Alexander's double but got thrown out on the play on a great relay started by right fielder J.D. Reininger thru second baseman Joe Anthonsen to catcher Joe Dempsey for the tag out to end the inning.
Lincoln added a run in the second. Deacon Burns reached base on a one-out single. Jake Jadlowski followed with a ground ball back to the pitcher. Ryan Ford's throw to first base was dropped by Patrick Reilly, and the first baseman's error allowed Jadlowski to reach and Burns to advance to third. Burrus followed with a sacrifice fly to score Burns, and the unearned run gave the Saltdogs a 3-0 cushion.
The Canaries got on the scoreboard in the following inning. A Tim Hutting walk was followed up by singles form Cody Haerther and Cory Harris as the Canaries loaded the bases for Trevor Lawhorn. Lawhorn walked to score Hutting and put the Birds on the scoreboard, 3-1. Patrick Reilly followed with a ground ball that allowed Haerther to score and get Sioux Falls within a run, 3-2.
Lincoln scored an insurance run in the seventh inning. Jake Jadlowski singled and advanced into scoring position on a single by McFeely. After Ford struck out Hawke, the Canaries brought in Angelo Morales from the bullpen. Morales gave up a single to Balet that scored Jadlowski and gave the Saltdogs a two-run lead, 4-2.
The lead was not enough as the Canaries roared back in the ninth inning. Joe Dempsey started the inning with a walk. After Kyle Eveland flew out to left field, Hutting singled and Haerther walked to load the bases. With a Canary perched on every bag, Harris provided a two-run single to score Dempsey and Hutting, tying the game, 4-4. Saltdogs closer Chris Thompson struck out Lawhorn, but Reilly came through with a two-out single to score Haerther and give the Birds the 5-4 lead.
Ryan Grant sat the side down in order in the ninth inning for the first save of his professional career. Angelo Morales (2-6) struck out three of the five batters he faced in picking up the win. Chris Thompson (0-2) suffered the loss for Lincoln.
The Canaries now head for Wichita where they will open a four-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday, July 17 for a series with the Sioux City Explorers. The series opener will be DAV Night featuring a Team Card Set Giveaway and Friday Night Fireworks presented by Sanford Health.
