Birds snap losing streak with 5-2 win

St. Joseph, MO - The Sioux Falls Canaries (12-15) stopped a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the St. Joe Blacksnakes (13-14) on Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe grabbed the early 1-0 lead on a second inning solo home run by Mark Burke, his third homer of the season.

The Canaries tied the game in the top of the third. Angelo Fermin walked to lead off the inning and scored on Chad Hermansen's 24th double of the season evening the score, 1-1.

The Birds went ahead in the fourth inning. Dennis Anderson hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot, to put the Canaries ahead, 2-1. John Schmitz and Chris Hall followed with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Anthony Monegan came to the plate with two outs and singled to score Schmitz for a 3-1 lead.

Sioux Falls extended the lead in the fifth inning. Chad Hermansen reached on an error and Abner Arroyo singled to put runners on the corners. Bubba Smith hit a sacrifice fly to plate Hermansen and put the Canaries ahead 4-1. Dennis Anderson followed with a double to advance Abner Arroyo to third base. Arroyo would score on a wild pitch to give the Canaries a 5-1 lead.

Wil Quintana hit his league-leading 17th homer of the season in the eighth inning to provide St. Joe's final run in the 5-2 final.

Tony Cogan (7-3) picked up the win for the Canaries, Jesen Merle (4-4) suffered the loss, and Matt Montgomery saved his sixth game of the season.
