St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
ST. JOSEPH, MO- The Sioux Falls Canaries (12-14, 28-47) evened the series with the Blacksnakes (13-14, 38-36) with a 5-2 victory. Sioux Falls scored five straight runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings to snap a six-game losing streak with the win.
Mark Burke started the scoring with a solo home run for St. Joe in the second, his third of the year. But Sioux Falls scored the next five runs over three innings to knock starter Jesen Merle from the game and take a 5-1 lead. The Canaries' Dennis Anderson broke the 1-1 tie with a solo home run, his seventh of the season in the fourth inning.
Wil Quintana powered a solo home run over the right field fence, his league-leading 17th of the season, to bring St. Joe within 5-2 in the eighth inning, but the âSnakes could not overcome the deficit.
Merle (4-4) allowed five runs-three earned-in just 4 1/3 innings, and the bullpen (Shingo Mitsumori, Matt Johnson and Josh Jarman) combined to retire the last 14 hitters to give the offense a chance.
Lincoln again beat St. Paul, 8-0, so St. Joe falls to six behind first-place Lincoln, but does not lose any ground in the "wild card" chase to St. Paul. St. Joe trails the Saints in overall record by 2 ½ games.
St. Joe hosts Sioux Falls for the third of the four game series Saturday night at 7:05pm. It is American Family Insurance T-Shirt Giveaway Night, as the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a free t-shirt. The gates open at 6pm at Phil Welch Stadium. J.C. Huguet (3-3) takes the hill for the âSnakes against Sioux Falls' Sean Donlin (0-4).
