Xs outscore Diablos

SIOUX CITY - The Sioux City Explorers defeated the El Paso Diablos 11-8 Friday night at Lewis and Clark Park. The win improves the Xs overall record to 38-39 (14-15 second half), and the loss drops the Diablos to 25-47 (8-16 second half).

Sioux City got out of the gates quick, scoring runs in the home half of the first and second. In the first, JJ Burress singled to left and would score on a wild pitch. Jake Daubert led off the second getting hit, and would score on a Burress single to second.

El Paso came roaring back in the top of the third, scoring six runs. Brandon Haygood hit a two run home run, his first of the year. A JP Schmidt double to left would drive in a run, followed by Jorge Alvarez RBI single to third. A Evan Conley double to left center would drive in one, and a JJ Burress error would allow another to score.

The Xs would cut down the lead in the bottom of the third, getting two runs. Jorge Moreno led off with his 17th home run of the year, this one to left field. Two batters later Chris Grossman got his ninth home run on the season.

El Paso added two more runs in the top of the fourth. Sioux City answered in the home half of the fourth, when JJ Burress led off with a triple and Zack Pace drove him in with a sacrifice fly. The Xs would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth, plating four runs. Kevin Henry hit a monster three run home run that sailed well over the scoreboard in left center field. Burress singled and scored on an Alex Llanos single to center. The Xs added runs in the bottom halves of sixth and eighth to seal the win.

The X's JD Scholten relieved starter Nate Holguin in the fourth inning and dominated the Diablo lineup. Scholten went four innings, allowing only one hit, no runs or walks, and struck out five to improve his record to 4-2. David McWatters (3-8) relieved El Paso starter Jose Garcia in the third inning, and took the loss. McWatters went 4.2 innings, allowed eight hits, six runs, walked one and struck out four. Sean Kramer picked up his 14th save of the year, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the second straight night.

JJ Burress led the X's offense, going 4-5 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Kevin Henry was 2-4, with three driven in and two runs scored. Jake Daubert and Chris Grossman each went 2-4, with one RBI and two runs scored. Every Xs player to bat had at least one hit.

Sioux City will go for the three game sweep of El Paso Saturday night at Lewis and Clark Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with Chris Swiatkiewicz (0-1) starting for the Xs and Andy Torres (6-5) going for the Diablos.
