Pensacola Pelicans News Release

Rain may have delayed the Pelicans and Sports from starting on time, a 10 minute delay, but it didn't stop 1,807 fans from making their way out to Pelican Park. COX Sports Television was on hand to broadcast the second ever live baseball game from Pelican Park. After a huge Sports lead early, the Pelicans were able to crawl back, making for a good close game. However, Shreveport was able to hold on and win 8-6.

The Shreveport Sports jumped on the board early as the first five hitters reached base. They collected two walks and four hits, including a grand slam by Chad Gambill, his eighth homerun of the season and RBI number 59. In the bottom of the inning, the Pelicans cut the lead in half as Juan Rocha homered for the second straight night, a two-run shot that scored Jose Yepez who singled.

In the top of the second inning the Sports added another four runs as they sent nine hitters to the plate for the second consecutive inning. Shortstop Enohel Polanco ripped a double that brought Justin Humphries and Neb Brown in to score. Tommy Bryant drove in a pair as well with a single that plated Polanco and Todd Self, giving the Sports an 8-2 advantage.

Former University of West Florida star Todd Androsko came in for relief of Benny Walker in the top of the second and turned in an outstanding pitching performance. Androsko threw seven innings scattering four hits, allowing only two runs and striking out five to keep the Pelicans in the game.

With Androsko keeping the Sports in check the Pelican offense went to work, chipping away at the early lead all game. Rolo Avila led of the third with a single and scored on a single by Yepez making the score 8-3.

In the sixth the Pelicans added another run and then two more in the seventh. Yepez scored in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Tim Dorn and both Drake Wade and Ed Montague came in to score in the seventh as Yepez tallied another RBI. With the bases loaded in the 8th inning, Rolo Avila grounded into an inning ending double play, leaving the Pelicans two runs short of the comeback.

Jeff Little pitched the final inning and two-third to finish the game for the Sports, an 8-6 victory.
