Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD - What had the makings of a tight contest got blown open in the final moments as the Delmarva Shorebirds were bested 12-4 by the Salem Red Sox on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The Shorebirds (23-54, 2-10) saw multiple leads slip away to the Red Sox (42-36, 7-5) and ultimately saw their chances at a late rally extinguished as well.

Delmarva grabbed their first lead in the third. Luis Valdez walked and Heston Kjerstad singled him to third allowing an Elio Prado double play to score Valdez and make it 1-0.

Salem answered right back in the top of the fourth. Yorberto Mejicano singled home a run before Mejicano and Blaze Jordan pulled off a double steal, with Jordan swiping home, to give Salem a 2-1 edge.

Not to be outdone, the 'Birds loaded the bases to start the bottom of the fourth. Stiven Acevedo brought in a run with an infield single before Valdez drove home two with a double to make it 4-2.

Continuing the see-saw battle, Salem plated three runs of their own in the fifth to retake the lead. Jordan singled home a run before Eduardo Lopez tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Salem then took the lead when Marcelo Mayer scored on a passed ball.

The Red Sox tacked on another in the seventh on a Jordan RBI fielder's choice and then exploded for six runs with two outs in the ninth to take full control of the game, handing the Shorebirds a 12-4 loss.

Luis De La Rosa (1-0) picked up the win in his Salem debut, firing two scoreless innings, giving up just a hit while striking out four.

Hugo Beltran (3-5) suffered the loss for the Shorebirds, allowing two unearned runs on a hit and two walks, striking out one.

Graham Hoffman picked up his first save of the season by virtue of coming into the game while it was 6-4. Hoffman worked two perfect frames, striking out five.

The Shorebirds continue their six-game series with the Salem Red Sox on Friday, July 8 at Perdue Stadium. Edgar Portes (0-3, 3.86) is slated to start for the Shorebirds while Salem tabs Angel Bastardo (2-1, 3.62). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com and MiLB.TV with Sam Jellinek on the call.
