Augusta GreenJackets News Release
CHARLESTON, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets (2-10) were unable to get out of their losing skid on Thursday night as the Charleston RiverDogs (6-6) came back on them again with a big fifth inning to hand Augusta their ninth straight defeat by a score of 8-4.
After a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, the GreenJackets struck first with a run in the third inning on a base hit by Brandol Mezquita that brought in Cal Conley after the RiverDogs committed two errors on the play. That was the only run Augusta scored in the inning as they took a lead 1-0 after three.
In the fourth, the GreenJackets would add more to that lead on a double-play ball off the bat of Connor Blair that scored Stephen Paolini to up the lead to 2-0. A few batters later, Cal Conley doubled the advantage with a two-run triple down the right-field line to plate Eliezel Stevens and Caleb Durbin to jump ahead 4-0.
Charleston would come through with their first runs of the night in the next half-inning on an RBI single by Oneil Manzueta to make it 4-1. One more run would come in and score following a wild pitch to trim the Augusta lead to 4-2 after four frames.
An inning later, the GreenJackets fell behind for the first time as Willy Vasquez hit a go-ahead grand slam with two outs to catapult the RiverDogs ahead for the first time in the game 6-4.
Augusta's offense was held in check the rest of the night as they were unable to get anything going in the second half of the game.
Charleston put them away with two more runs in the seventh to make it 8-4. They'd go on to win by that score as the GreenJackets' losing streak has now reached nine games.
Neraldo Catalina (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Charleston on Wednesday night with James Acuña (1-2) taking the loss for Augusta.
Cal Conley was the top performer for the GreenJackets finishing 3/5 with two singles and a triple that scored two runs, Conley's fifth three-hit game of the season. Brandol Mezquita reached four times with a 2/3 performance with two singles and two walks with his only out snapping a run of 8-straight plate appearances where he reached base. Stephen Paolini collected his second multi-hit game in a row while Braulio Vasquez was 3/4 with a single and two doubles.
The GreenJackets take the field at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark once again on Friday night with Luis Vargas taking the rubber versus JJ Goss for the RiverDogs with first pitch set for 7:05 pm.
