Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - In one of the fastest games of the year at Atrium Health Ballpark, the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers crushed three home runs and allowed just three hits by Carolina Mudcat batters, winning 6-1 in a two hour and seven-minute Wednesday night matchup.
LHP Tommy Sommer failed to reach 6+ strikeouts in a start for just the second time all year, but the lefty from Indiana torched Mudcat batters for six shutout, one-hit innings. Sommer earns his fourth victory of 2022 with his outing, striking out two along the way. RHP Bowen Plagge (S, 2) relieved Sommer in the seventh and shut the door on the Mudcats despite allowing a home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. The righty tossed five strikeouts, walking none, and allowing just two hits and one run.
It took a little longer than hoped for, but Kannapolis jumped ahead first in the ballgame, picking up back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth inning from DJ Gladney and Samil Polanco. The pair of doubles gave the Ballers a comfy 3-0 lead in the fourth, giving just enough of a cushion to the pitching staff to deal with confidence.
Logan Glass and Caberea Weaver extended the Ballers advantage with back-to-back solo homers in the fifth inning, giving Kannapolis a big boost on offense in the form of a 5-0 lead.
Wilfred Veras joined in on the fun with an insurance run in the eighth inning, crushing an opposite field home run to extend the Ballers lead to 6-0 late in the matchup.
It took 26 total outs for Carolina to muster up any offense, but Jackson Chourio finally broke through in the top of the ninth inning with a solo shot, snapping the Ballers scoreless inning streak at 16 consecutive frames. The solo home run from the Milwaukee Brewers No. 1 prospect shortened the Kannapolis lead to 6-1 late before Plagge shut the door on the very next pitch, drawing a game-ending groundout.
Kannapolis will look to continue their winning ways in their third matchup of the week with the Carolina Mudcats on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. RHP Hunter Dollander (1-0, 4.22 ERA) will get the start for the Ballers, with the Mudcats sending out RHP Stiven Cruz (3-2, 3.83 ERA).
Fans can purchase tickets for any upcoming home games at kcballers.com or at the F&M Bank Box Office located at Atrium Health Ballpark.
