MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans used timely hitting and a stellar start from Bryan Hudson to down the Frederick Keys 5-3 on Wednesday night at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
J.C. Escarra gave Frederick (5-8) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when he drove in Kirvin Moesquit with an RBI single.
Myrtle Beach (3-11) responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own. Cam Balego laced a double of off Michael Baumann (0-1), driving in Miguel Amaya and Luke Reynolds to make it 2-1 in favor of the Birds.
The Pelicans made it 3-1 in the fourth inning when Balego smoked a double into left and later scored on a single from Jhonny Bethencourt .
Frederick pulled within one run in the sixth when Zach Jarrett doubled to open the inning and was plated on a Ryan Ripken single, cutting the Myrtle Beach lead to 3-2.
Hudson (1-0) delivered one of the best starts of the season for Myrtle Beach as he went a season-high 5.1 innings and gave up just two runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two.
The Birds extended their lead to 4-2 in the sixth when Carlos Sepulveda walked to lead off the inning, stole second, reached third on an error and later came around to score on a bunt single from Zach Davis .
After Frederick mustered a run in the seventh inning to close the gap to 4-3, Myrtle Beach added the insurance run they needed in the eighth inning. Davis launched a triple to center field and Jimmy Herron laid a bunt RBI single down the third base line to make it 5-3 Myrtle Beach.
Brian Glowicki then locked down his first save of the year, tossing two innings of scoreless baseball to end the ballgame.
Myrtle Beach will take on the Lynchburg Hillcats in game one of a four-game series on Thursday night from Lynchburg, Va. at 6:30 p.m. The Birds have not announced a starter for the ballgame, but the Hillcats will send Juan Hillman (0-0, 0.00) to the mound.
