Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - After blowing a six-run lead, the Delmarva Shorebirds rallied from a run down to snatch a win away from the Fredericksburg Nationals, 11-9, on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Shorebirds (51-42) pitching had limited the Nationals (33-60) to just two runs in the first two games of the series, but Thursday proved to be a different tale.
The Nationals started the scoring in the second inning. Junior Martine drew a leadoff walk before Onix Vega singled to left center with an error on the play allowing Martina to sprint home with the first run of the game.
The Shorebirds answered immediately in the bottom half. After a Coby Mayo walk and Donta' Williams double started the inning, John Rhodes singled to tie the score with Darell Hernaiz following with a sacrifice fly to put the Shorebirds ahead 2-1.
In the third, Colton Cowser got a green light on a 3-0 pitch and smashed a double with two away to score Reed Trimble from first and make it 3-1.
The FredNats got one back in the fourth after Martina doubled to start the frame and scored after tagging up on back-to-back flyouts.
Two more came across in the bottom half for Delmarva as they turned four walks, an error, and a hit batter into two runs thanks to a Collin Burns sacrifice fly and a Billy Cook bases loaded free pass to make it 5-2.
May was plunked to start the fifth for Delmarva with Williams then walking. Rhodes took advantage of the situation and blasted a three-run homer, his first of the season, to extend the lead to 8-2.
Things held steady until the seventh when the FredNats erupted to tie the game. Three straight singles started the inning, the last of which was an RBI knock for Leandro Emiliani. Braian Fernandez then brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. After a groundout, the Nationals loaded the bases after a walk and fielder's choice. Martina then knocked in two with a base hit before Vega tied the game at 8-8 with another two-run knock.
The Nationals kept their foot on the gas, taking the lead in the eighth. With two outs and runners at second and third, Jeremy De La Rosa legged out an infield single, plating the go-ahead run.
The lead was short lived for the FredNats. Trimble beat out an infield single to start the bottom half with Cook following with a walk. After a flyout sent Trimble to third, he scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. After a groundout, Donta' Williams stroked a double off the wall in left to plate Cook and give the Shorebirds the lead. Rhodes singled home Williams for insurance, bringing the game to its final line of 11-9.
Leonardo Rodriguez (2-1) picked up the win for the Shorebirds. He allowed four runs on three hits and three walks.
Tomas Alastre (2-2) was saddled with the loss for the FredNats. He conceded all three runs in the eighth on three hits and a walk, striking out one.
Thomas Girard earned his second save of the season for the Shorebirds, hitting a batter while striking out one.
Rhodes paced the Shorebirds offense, driving in five runs total which ties the most a Shorebirds player has driven in this season. Every hitter in the Shorebirds lineup either scored a run or drove one in.
The Shorebirds will try to make it four in a row against the Nationals on Friday, August 20. Jake Lyons (2-3, 4.25) takes the ball for Delmarva against Rodney Theophile (2-9, 4.76) for the Nationals. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
