Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Thanks to six runs in the first inning, five in the second, and six more in the eighth, the Delmarva Shorebirds shellacked the Fredericksburg Nationals 17-1 on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The win locked up a series win for the Shorebirds (52-42) over the Nationals (33-61).
The FredNats were actually the first to strike as Jordy Barley doubled to lead off the first and then came around to score after two groundouts.
From that point on, the Shorebirds plated 17 unanswered runs. In the first, the Shorebirds brewed up some two out magic, scoring six with two away thanks to a two-run double from Jacob Teter, RBI single from Billy Cook, and a three-run homer for Ryne Ogren, his third of the season.
In the second, Connor Norby piled on with an RBI double before coming home to score on a Donta' Williams RBI single. Cook then followed with his second RBI knock of the day, this time a double. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Mason Janvrin roped a two-run single to left to make it 11-1.
The game fell into equilibrium until the Shorebirds scored six more in the eighth. Cook produced his third RBI knock of the day with a single before Collin Burns and Darell Hernaiz forced home runs with bases loaded walks. Coby Mayo pitched in with an RBI single before Colton Cowser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cap the scoring at 17-1.
Jake Lyons (3-3) twirled a quality start for the Shorebirds to earn the win, allowing just one run on three hits and a walk, tying a career high with eight strikeouts.
Rodney Theophile (2-10) suffered the loss for the FredNats as he coughed up nine runs on five hits and four walks, striking out two, in 1.2 frames.
Rickey Ramirez collected his third save of the year for the Shorebirds with three no-hit innings to end the game, striking out two.
Every player in the Shorebirds lineup, including Mayo who entered as a defensive substitution, scored at least one run and drove in at least one in an all-around team performance. Cook finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs to stand out among a loaded box score for the Shorebirds.
The Shorebirds will try to make it five in a row against the FredNats on Saturday, August 21. The Shorebirds send Jean Pinto (0-1, 1.74) to the mound against Matt Merrill (1-1, 5.40) for the FredNats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
