Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALEM, VA - Despite stranding 14 runners on base, the Delmarva Shorebirds prevailed in comeback fashion in a 7-3 victory over the Salem Red Sox on Saturday night at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
The Shorebirds (57-44) scored first for the fifth straight game against the Red Sox (59-42), getting on the board in the very first inning.
Billy Cook tattooed a baseball over the wall in left, his first homer of the year, to put Delmarva ahead 1-0.
Ryne Ogren doubled the lead for the Shorebirds with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
After being no-hit through the first three frames, Salem struck gold with their first hit, an RBI double for Blaze Jordan after two walks. A sacrifice fly from Matthew Lugo then tied the score at 2-2.
Ceddanne Rafaela powered Salem in front with a solo homer, his 10th of the season, in the sixth.
Donta' Williams walked to open the eighth for the Shorebirds and two outs later swiped second. Darell Hernaiz then drove him in with a base hit to knot the score at 3-3.
After a contentious bottom of the ninth where Salem stranded the winning run at third base, Delmarva exploded for four runs in the tenth. Ryne Ogren gave the Shorebirds the lead with an RBI double, beginning a string of four straight hits with RBI singles for Hernaiz and Cook before Cowser capped the scoring with an RBI groundout, making it 7-3.
Rickey Ramirez (1-0) collected the win for the Shorebirds with two scoreless innings of relief. Ramirez allowed a hit and struck out three.
Jacinto Arredondo (1-2) was tagged with the loss for Salem after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits.
Now with a 3-2 series lead, the Shorebirds aim for the series victory on Sunday, August 29 against the Red Sox. Delmarva puts the ball in the hands of Houston Roth (8-2, 3.44) while Salem has yet to announce a starter. First pitch is slated for 4:05 p.m. at Salem Memorial Ballpark with pregame coverage beginning at 3:50 p.m. on Fox Sports 960 AM and IHeartRadio online with Sam Jellinek on the call. MiLB.TV coverage will be provided by the Red Sox.
