Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Using the momentum of their walk-off win the night prior, the Delmarva Shorebirds plated two in the sixth inning to take down the Down East Wood Ducks 5-3 on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Shorebirds (45-34) have now taken the first two games of the series against the Wood Ducks (43-36).
Delmarva got to work right away in the first. Mason Janvrin legged out an infield single to begin the frame and one out later Darell Hernaiz launched a two-run homer, his fifth of the year, to start the scoring. TT Bowens then singled and one out later stole second before Cristopher Cespedes walked. Ryne Ogren then ripped a single to center to score Bowens and make it 3-0.
In the third, Brady Smith reached on an error and Keithron Moss singled to start the inning for Down East. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, Luisangel Acuna scored Smith with a groundout to short.
Alejandro Osuna made it a one-run game in the fourth with a solo homer, his third of the year, for the Wood Ducks.
Down East managed to tie the score in the sixth. Acuna singled to start the inning and then advanced to second on a groundout. Cristian Inoa then slapped a single to right to score Acuna and knot the score at 3-3.
The score did not stay tied for long as Delmarva rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Willy Yahn walked to start the inning and Logan Michaels then reached on an error. Mason Janvrin then coaxed another walk to load the bases. Lamar Sparks then snuck a single through the left side to score Yahn and put the Shorebirds ahead. After a popup, TT Bowens hit into a fielder's choice at third that scored Michaels and brought the game to its final score of 5-3.
Gregori Vasquez (1-0) earned the win in relief for Delmarva. Vasquez allowed one run in three innings on two hits and four strikeouts. Vasquez saw his scoreless innings streak come to a close at nine consecutive frames.
Eris Filpo (2-3) is handed the loss for Down East. Filpo conceded two unearned runs on one hit and two walks, striking out two.
Nick Roth collected his first save of the year with two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and two walks while striking out one.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Shane Davis started for Delmarva and went four frames, allowing two runs, one earned on three hits and three strikeouts. His counterpart, John Matthews for Down East, gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out four.
Hernaiz finished the game 2-for-5 for the Shorebirds with a two-run homer. Yahn was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two walks and a run scored as well.
The Shorebirds look to make it three in a row against the Wood Ducks on Thursday, August 5. Noah Denoyer (5-3, 3.02) mans the hill for Delmarva against Florencio Serrano (1-0, 1.96) for Down East. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
