Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.- A ninth inning comeback was just barely too little too late for the Delmarva Shorebirds as they lost 7-5 to the Augusta GreenJackets on Sunday Afternoon at SRP Park.

The Shorebirds (6-15) and GreenJackets (12-9) saw what had been a well-pitched game explode offensively in the late going with a combined seven runs in the final two frames.

Both teams only had one hit and one run through the first five innings. Isaac Bellony went deep for Delmarva in the top of the second, his third of the year, while Brandol Mezquita answered in the bottom of the inning for Augusta with a homer of his own, his first of the year.

Rusber Estrada blasted a solo homer, his first of the year, to put Augusta ahead in the sixth. Adam Zebrowski tacked on two more runs with a base hit later in the frame to make it 4-1 Augusta.

Three crucial insurance runs crossed the plate for Augusta in the eighth. Kadon Morton smacked a solo homer, his second of the year, while a run-scoring error and RBI single for Brandol Mezquita made it 7-1.

The Shorebirds mounted a nearly epic comeback in the ninth. Darell Hernaiz began the inning with a triple and scored on a groundout. After a walk and fielder's choice put two on, Ryan Higgins doubled them both home to make it 7-4. After a flyout, Noelberth Romero drove in Higgins with a single to make it 7-5. The Shorebirds eventually loaded the bases for Darell Hernaiz with the tying run at second, but he was retired on strikes to end the game.

JJ Niekro (2-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen for Augusta. Niekro allowed four runs in 3.2 innings on four hits and two walks, striking out two.

Shane Davis (0-2) took the hard luck loss for Delmarva. Davis retired 11 batters in a row at one point, but ultimately allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits, striking out five.

Peyton Williams earned his first save of the year for Augusta, striking out Hernaiz for the final out after walking one and hitting a batter.

The Shorebirds continue their 12-game road trip as after an off-day Monday they took on the Columbia Fireflies on Tuesday, May 3. The starters to open the series are yet to be announced for both teams.. First pitch from Segra Park is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
