Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALEM, VA. - The Delmarva Shorebirds wiped away multiple deficits on the night but fell just a run short in coming back one final time as they lost 11-10 to the Salem Red Sox on Thursday night at Carilion Clinic Field.
The Shorebirds (38-72, 17-28) scored more than six runs for the third straight game but also allowed more than six runs to the Red Sox (57-53, 22-22) for the third straight night as well.
In the first, Salem drew three straight walks to start the frame. After a strikeout, a fourth walk to Yorberto Mejicano forced in a run. Johnfrank Salazer then hit a comebacker to the mound, but the throw to the plate was off-line, allowing two more runs to score, putting men at second and third as well. Matthew Donlan then produced a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
The Shorebirds cut the deficit in half in the second. Frederick Bencosme and Mishael Deson singled to start the frame. Noelberth Romero then doubled home Bencosme before Creed Willems brought in Deson with a sacrifice fly.

The 'Birds got it back to a two-run game again in the fourth. Romero walked with two outs before Willems doubled him home.
Elio Prado walked and Jud Fabian then doubled to start the fifth. A Dylan Beavers groundout scored Prado before Fabian was brought in on a sacrifice fly from Isaac De Leon to tie the game.
Salem reclaimed the lead in the sixth as Eduardo Lopez singled with two away to drive in Kier Meredith.
Delmarva responded right back, tying the game in the top of the seventh. Fabian doubled with two away before Beavers drove him in with a single, knotting the score at 6-6.
Salem busted the game open in the last of the eighth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Brainer Bonaci drilled a two-run single to left, with an error on the play allowing another run to score and putting Bonaci at second. After a walk, Mejicano singled in Bonaci, putting men at the corners. A balk then allowed another run to score, making it 11-6.
The Shorebirds started their rally in the ninth with two outs. Fabian doubled and Beavers was then hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved both up before De Leon reached on a dropped third strike which also allowed Fabian to score. Bencosme then blasted a three-run homer, his third of the year, bringing the 'Birds to within a run. Salem secured the final out of the game with a strikeout of Deson, holding on 11-10.
