Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
KINSTON, NC - Each team used their share of long balls in Tuesday night's doubleheader which the Pelicans and Kinston Indians split at Grainger Stadium. Kinston took the first game 6-3, but Myrtle Beach came out on top of game two 4-2. The Birds blasted a total of three home runs on the night, while the Indians used a pair.
In game one, the Indians would get their offense going in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer by Roman Pena. Myrtle Beach answered in the top of the fourth countering with three runs to go up 3-2. Michael Fisher began the inning with a base-hit and scored on an RBI groundout by Cody Johnson. With two outs and Ernesto Mejia at second base, Gerry Rodriguez homered to left field to put the Pelicans ahead.
For the fifth straight game, the Indians would put up multiple runs in the sixth. Chord Phelps led the inning off with a base hit and scored a batter later on Ole Sheldon's ninth home run of the season. Adam Davis scored later in the inning on a wild pitch and Ronald Rivas came home on an RBI single from Lucas Montero. That would prove to be all the K-Tribe would need as they took the opener 6-3. Pelican starter Edgar Osuna (3-6) took the loss after he allowed all six Kinston runs over five and one-thirds innings.
Russell Young (5-5) allowed three runs on five hits over six innings to earn the win. Kyle Landis (5) notched the save by pitching a scoreless seventh.
Kinston struck first again in game two. Richard Matinez opened the third inning with a single and scored on a groundout to second base to put the Indians up 1-0. With Donell Linares at second, Cody Johnson blasted his Carolina League leading 28th home run of the season to put the Birds up 2-1 in the top of the fourth.
The Indians came right back and tied it with a run in the bottom of the inning. Davis scored from third base on a passed ball charged to Pelican catcher Jesus Sucre.
The Pelicans quickly broke the tie in the top of the fifth when, with a man aboard, Randy Gress homered down the left field line. That proved to be the game winner as the Pelicans bullpen held the 4-2 lead.
Brandon Beachy (3-3) got credit for the win, his first as a starter. He allowed just the two runs on five hits while fanning seven over five innings. Cory Gearrin (15) earned the save by pitching a perfect seventh.
The series continues tomorrow when the Pelicans send right-hander Jacob Thompson to the mound against lefty Chris Jones. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 at Grainger Stadium.
