Frederick Keys News Release

The Frederick Keys had more than twice as many hits than the Wilmington Blue Rocks Wednesday night. Things broke just perfectly for the Blue Rocks, however, as they defeated the Keys 9-7.

The Keys staked RHP Kenny Moreland to an early lead. With one man down in the first, SS Pedro Florimon struck a double off the left field wall. 1B Robbie Widlansky knocked him in with a single, giving Frederick a 1-0 lead.

Wilmington tied it up in their half of the second. RF Paulo Orlando struck out swinging. The ball, however, got away from C Billy Killian, allowing Orlando to reach base. The speedy outfielder than stole second base, and reached third on a wild pitch. LF Jamar Walton knocked him in on a sac fly to left, tying the game at one.

Frederick had their biggest inning of the ball game in the second. LF Tyler Henson, 2B Ryan Adams, RF Billy Rowell and C Billy Killian hit four singles in a row to start off the frame, knocking in a run. With the bases loaded, Florimon hit an RBI-single. Then Widlansky struck a two-run double, making it a 5-1 Frederick lead.

With runners on the corners, 3B Brandon Waring tapped a ball slowly to the right side. The home plate umpire, however, accidentally called the ball foul, halting the play. The slow roller would've scored Florimon from third. Instead, Waring hitting a ball back to the mound. RHP Mario Santiago threw it home to get Florimon.

The Blue Rocks battled back in the fourth. Robinson and SS Anthony Seratelli hit back-to-back singles to start off the inning. Orlando then knocked in Robinson with a double. LF Jamar Walton grounded out to second, driving in Seratelli. 3B Chase Fontaine lifted a sac fly to center that scored Orlando, and made it a 5-4 ball game.

The Keys tacked on another run in their half of the fourth. CF Matt Angle reached on an error. He was eventually driven in by Widlansky on a single, to put Frederick ahead by two.

Wilmington tied it, however, in the fifth. 2B Johnny Giavotella and Robinson hit back-to-back solo homeruns.

Frederick took the lead back in the sixth. Angle singled. He then stole second base, to put himself in scoring position for Florimon, who stroked a single to center field. It scored Angle, and gave the Keys a 7-6 lead.

Florimon finished the game 5-5 with two RBI. He's the second Key to pick up five hits in a game. UTL Bobby Stevens had five hits back on May 10th, against Wilmington as well. Widlansky finished 4-5 with four RBI.

Once again, the Blue Rocks came back and tied the game in the eighth. Robinson stroked a single, his third hit of the game, to start off the grame. Seratelli laid down a bunt. RHP Zach Clark bobbled it, allowing Seratelli to reeach safely. A sac bunt moved the runners up to second and third. Robinson was knocked in on Fontaine's sac fly to left, tying the game up at seven.

Wilmington took their first lead of the game in the ninth. Keys closer RHP Brandon Cooney hit the first batter in CF Derrick Robinson. With Giavotella at the plate, Robinson broke for second. It was a pitch out, and C Caleb Joseph's throw beat Robinson to the bag. The field umpire ruled Robinson safe. The Keys argued the call, but to no avail.

Giavotella was able to work a walk. With two on, Robinson and Giavotella attempted a double-steal. Joseph's throw to third went into left, allowing Robinson to score. Seratelli tried to lay down a bunt. Cooney threw wildly to first, allowing Giavotella to score from third, and giving the Blue Rocks a 9-7 lead.

LHP Kelvin Villa (5-7) allowed an earned run on four hits in three innings of relief to pick up the win. Cooney (0-2) surrendered the two unearned runs, and was credited with the loss. RHP Eric Basurto (2) pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

The Keys will try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Blue Rocks on Thursday night at Harry Grove Stadium. It's Negro League Night at the ballpark. Both teams will be wearing Negro League uniforms. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
