Potomac Nationals News Release
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals play the second of four games with the Southern Division First-Half champion Winston-Salem Dash from Wake Forest Baseball Park with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The P-Nats fell from first place in the Northern Division after losing last night's finale of a twinbill with the Dash while Wilmington swept a double dip with Frederick from Harry Grove Stadium in Maryland. The Nationals remain just a half game behind the Blue Rocks for the last playoff spot coming out of the North. Winston-Salem meanwhile, is just one game over .500 at 24-23 since the break and are looking to sweep both halves in the Southern Division as they hold a 2.0 game cushion over Kinston and Salem.
TOMMY BOY: Potomac left-hander Tom Milone has now won each of his last 5 decisions dating back to July 17, including four consecutive starts entering tonight's clash with the Dash. In those 4 outings, the 22-year-old has allowed just 2 earned runs in 26.1 innings (0.68 ERA) with two victories coming at the expense of first-place Wilmington. Milone, a product of the University of Southern California baseball program, is now the Nationals team leader in wins with nine and is ranked 4th in the CL with a 3.13 ERA in his first season against Carolina League competition. The second-year southpaw has also logged the third most innings of work in the circuit having already twirled 126.1 frames which matches the total of Frederick Keys ace Zach Britton.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTERS: RHP Anthony Carter, 23, was the 26th round selection of the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 Draft out of Georgia Perimeter College in Dacatur, Georgia. Carter split time last season between Low-A Kannapolis and Winston-Salem compiling a record of 11-7 with a 3.99 ERA in 28G/27GS. The right-hander held South Atlantic League opponents to a .213 batting average against and he struck out 66 batters in 61.2 innings with the Intimidators. Carter attended Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia. Other notable alumni from Parkview include New York Mets OF Jeff Francouer and current New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Jon Stinchcomb.
Carter enters tonight's game with the P-Nats as the only 11-game winner in the Carolina League and he's also coming in off a dominant performance against Wilmington having tossed 6.0 shutout innings while matching a season-high with nine strikeouts in a victory on 8/13. He's 5-1 over his last nine starts and has failed to go six innings twice in that span. His lone loss in that stretch was to Potomac who handed this right-hander a 4-1 defeat from Pfitzner Stadium on July 31. The P-Nats have handled this Pitcher of the Year candidate very well this season as Carter is 1-3 with a 8.31 ERA. In a June 11 outing, the Dash ace did silence the Potomac bats allowing just one run on two hits and five strikeouts in a 2-1 victory for Winston-Salem. The righty also surrendered three earned runs on four hits while striking out seven over 5.0 innings in a 3-2 loss to the P-Nats during Potomac's Middle School Math Day game at 10:30 a.m. on April 21. The Nats really lowered the hammer on Carter in Winston-Salem on May 8th when he got tagged for nine runs on 10 hits including four Potomac homers in a 12-4 pounding of the Dash. In addition to leading the CL in wins, Carter comes into today ranked 1st in innings pitched (133.1), 3rd in K's (116) and tied for the league-lead in home runs allowed having served up 14 bombs in â09.
