Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds' offense was kept quiet by the Charleston Riverdogs' pitching staff in game one of the series, holding Delmarva to just one run and dropping them 2-1 for their fifth straight loss on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Janson Junk (5-3) pitched well for the Riverdogs (18-21, 51-56) allowing just one run on five hits, walking one, and striking out four. Brandon Bonilla (0-1) took the loss in his first start as a Shorebird (19-20, 54-52) surrendering one run on no hits, walking two, and striking out two in his three innings pitched. Daniel Alvarez pitched two innings of relief and picked up his first save of the year after allowing one hit, while striking out three.
Charleston found the scoreboard in the top of the second inning when Dermis Garcia reached first on a lead-off walk. Garcia advanced to second on a Carlos Vidal hit-by-pitch, while both runners moved up on a Bonilla wild pitch. Welfrin Mateo then skied a fly ball into center that brought home Garcia on a sacrifice fly, putting Charleston in front 1-0.
Neither team could find the scoreboard again until the seventh inning began. Vidal walked with one out in the inning and advanced to third on a hit and run with Mateo. A wild pitch again tacked on another run after Vidal scampered home to make it a 2-0 Riverdogs lead.
In the home half of the seventh the Shorebirds found their only run of the night against Junk. Trevor Craport turned on a ball to left field that just bounced off the top of the wall for a solo home run.
That would be all the offense the Shorebirds could muster for the rest of the game. Alvarez came in and shut the door on the 'Birds in the final two frames to steal game one of the series.
Craport was 1-for-4 with the solo home run in the seventh inning. Mason McCoy was 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
Mateo was 2-for-3 and tacked on an RBI in the win for the Riverdogs.
The Shorebirds will look to snap their losing streak in game two of the series with the Riverdogs. Cameron Bishop (8-5, 2.95) gets the nod for the Shorebirds against Alex Mauricio (0-1, 12.83) for the Riverdogs. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. Friday is a Q105 Fireworks night presented by Pohanka of Salisbury, Bank of Delmarva Money Giveaway where the first 1,000 fans will receive envelopes of cash ranging from $1 with one lucky winner receiving $500. It's also Froggy 99.9 Big Beer Friday and Orange Friday. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Drew Williams on the call.
