
Birds Flattened by Woodpeckers in Series Finale

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers slammed the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 13-4 from Segra Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Woodpeckers (54-59, 23-21) jumped on the Pelicans (43-68, 22-22) early, scoring in each of the first four innings.
In the first, Chandler Taylor smashed a two-run homer off of Pelicans starter Alexander Vargas (L, 2-4), giving the Woodpeckers a 2-0 lead. It was Taylor's third home run of the series, one in each of the three games.
In the second, Fayetteville plated four runs. Scott Schreiber started it with an RBI double and scored on Cal Stevenson's RBI single to put the Woodpeckers up 4-0. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Cory Julks and Ross Adolf capped the inning and sent Fayetteville to a 6-0 advantage.
David Hensley gave the Woodpeckers a 7-0 lead with an RBI ground out in the third and a Pelicans error added another tally to make it 8-0.
Scott Manea then crushed a solo homer run in the fourth to put the Woodpeckers ahead 9-0.
The Birds finally found the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Cam Balego began the scoring with an RBI ground out before Miguel Amaya slammed a two-run home run, his ninth of the season, to make it 9-3 Fayetteville.
In the sixth, the Woodpeckers put up a pair more with an RBI single from Julks and an RBI double from Manea to extend the lead to 11-3
Luke Reynolds reached on an error in the eighth, scoring Grant Fennell, making it 12-1, but the Woodpeckers added on a couple more in the eighth.
Eric Gonzalez, a catcher for the Pelicans, came in to pitch the eighth and allowed two runs on Manea and Hensley RBI singles.
Austin Hansen (W, 3-2) took home the win for the Woodpeckers with two innings out of the bullpen, only allowing one unearned run.
Following a day off on Monday, the Pelicans are back home on Tuesday to begin a six-game homestand. The stretch starts with the first game of a three-game series against the Winston-Salem Dash at 7:05 p.m. The Pelicans have yet to announce a starter, but the Dash with send RHP Zach Lewis (5-5, 6.07 ERA) to the mound.
