Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - 1B Kevin Witt and LF Ray Lankford each homered, pushing the Redbirds past the Oklahoma RedHawks in a see-saw battle in Friday night's series finale. The win puts the 'Birds seven games back of first-place Oklahoma with 17 games to play, including five more at Oklahoma next week.

Lankford's third-inning bomb gave Memphis a 2-0 advantage, but Oklahoma got on the board in the fourth on a run-scoring single by C Ken Huckaby. The Redbirds answered in the bottom half of the fourth on an RBI single by 2B Bo Hart, but the RedHawks tied the game at 3-3 with back-to-back RBI singles by 1B Adrian Gonzalez and SS Marshall McDougall in the fifth.

The 'Birds took the lead for good in the sixth, when Witt's leadoff homer put them up by a score of 4-3. A one-out double by Hart in the eighth drove in Witt, who had led off the inning with a double, to give Memphis what proved to be an important insurance run. CF Jason Conti homered with two outs in the top of the ninth off LHP Carmen Cali, but Cali struck out RF Pete Zoccolillo with a runner on first to end the game and the 'Hawks' comeback hopes.

RHP Mark Nussbeck picked up the win for the Redbirds to improve to 2-1, scattering 10 hits over 6.0 innings while allowing three runs and striking out one. RHP Chan Ho Park took the loss, giving up four earned in 6.1 innings despite striking out eight Memphis hitters. Cali picked up his second save of the season, giving up the homer to Conti in an inning of work.

Memphis begins a four-game set with the Omaha Royals at 6:05 p.m. Saturday, while Oklahoma travels to Nashville to take on the Sounds.
