Portland Beavers News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Dennis Tankersley combined with two other Portland pitchers on a four-hit shutout, and Ramon Vazquez homered for the game's only offense as the Beavers defeated the Sacramento River Cats 2-0 Thursday night at Raley Field.

Mike Bynum worked 1.1 innings of relief and Marty McLeary came on in the ninth to get his 13th save and round out the shutout, the Beavers' 10th of the season. Tankersley (7-4) worked 6.2 innings for his seventh win and allowed just three hits and one walk to the River Cats, who far and away lead the league in walks with 642.

Vazquez went 3-for-4 and hit a two-run home run in the first inning off Mike Ziegler (2-6), who took the hard-luck loss after striking out nine and allowing just four hits in 7.0 innings of work.

The win was Tankersley's first against the River Cats (71-55) in seven career appearances, marking the 12th different PCL team he has defeated as the only player to play in each of the Beavers' four seasons.

For the third straight time in the series, the Beavers (71-55) scored in the top of the first to take the lead. Bobby Scales, who returned to the Beavers on Wednesday from Class AA Mobile, reached base after being hit with a pitch and Vazquez hit his eighth home run.

The series concludes Friday night at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: The Beavers signed first baseman Robert Fick and added left-hander Alan Webb from Class AA Mobile on Thursday. Fick struck out three times in his debut ... the Beavers will be giving out Tagg Bozied bobblehead dolls to the first 3,000 fans in attendance at Saturday's home game against Tacoma.
