Akron RubberDucks News Release
Binghamton righthander Rainy Lara twirled 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, and combined with a pair of B-Mets relievers on a 1-0 shutout victory over the Akron RubberDucks Friday evening at Canal Park.
Turning Point
The B-Mets (1-1) scratched out the game's only run in the top of the fifth against Akron starter Cody Anderson (0-1). Xorge Carrillo was hit by a pitch and stole second. A single by Eudy Pina advanced Carrillo to third with one out. Left fielder Jared King, the Binghamton lead-off man, then hit a high bouncer to first baseman Jake Lowery, driving in Carrillo for a 1-0 lead. It was King's first RBI of the season.
Mound Presence
Lara (1-0) held the RubberDucks (1-1) to two harmless singles over his 6 2/3 innings of work. He walked two and fanned five to pick up his first win of the season. Lefty Dario Alvarez chipped in 1 1/3 innings, and closer Jon Velasquez worked a perfect ninth for his first save.
Duck Tales
Despite an impressive effort, Anderson suffered the hard-luck loss for the RubberDucks in his first start of the season. He allowed just one run on three hits over 6 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out three. He came out blazing at the outset, touching 96 mph on the stadium radar gun consistently. After retiring the first 12 batters he faced, he yielded a lead-off single to Jace Boyd leading off the fifth to break up the no-hit bid.
Notes
CF Jordan Smith robbed Binghamton's Jared King of extra bases with a sensational, diving catch leading off the B-Mets fourth inning...After scoring 14 runs on 17 hits in Thursday's season-opener, no RubberDucks runner reached second base...Akron reliever Grant Sides fanned back-to-back hitters with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to keep the game close... Smith and Bryson Myles collected the only hits for the RubberDucks, both singles. Myles bunted his way on in the sixth but was erased on a double play...Time of game was 2:28...Attendance: 3,298.
