
Binghamton Gains Series Lead as Fightins Fall

(Reading, PA) - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (9-14, 44-48) prevailed 6-3 over the Reading Fightin Phils (11-12, 39-52) on Thursday Night. The give Binghamton the 2-1 edge at the midpoint of this week's six-game series.
R-Phils starting pitcher Mick Abel struggled to start the outing. The right hander walked three and threw 31 pitches just in the first inning. The Rumble Ponies only managed to get one across in the first thanks to an RBI single from Brandon McIlwaine to make it 1-0 Binghamton.
The Ponies followed up in the second with another run in the second. A lead-off home run to deep left center field from Hayden Senger made it 2-0 Binghamton.
The Reading offense responded in the bottom half of the inning. After two quick singles from Carlos De La Cruz and Baron Radcliff, a sacrifice fly from Matthew Kroon gave the Phils their first run of the night and cut the lead in half 2-1.
The Fightins added another in the fourth thanks to the hot bat of Cam Cannon. He launched a solo home run to tie the game up at two. This was Cannon's third home run in just two days.
The Rumble Ponies came back onto the attack in the fifth. Wyatt Young started the inning with a walk, followed by Rowdy Jordan with a single. JT Schwartz, fresh off the IL, ripped one to Reading right fielder Jhailyn Ortiz, scoring Young and Jordan to make it 4-2 Binghamton. Schwartz was thrown out at second on the throw from Max McDowell.
Abel's day came to a close after striking out the next batter, Jose Peroza. Abel threw 4.2 innings, striking out eight and allowing five hits. Max Kuhns entered in relief of Abel and struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Binghamton tacked on two more in the top of the ninth. Hayden Senger doubled to lead off the inning, followed by Jaylen Palmer with a single to move Senger to third. A sacrifice fly from Young scored Senger to make it 5-3 Rumble Ponies. Schwartz later singled to record his third RBI of the night, scoring Palmer to make it 6-3 Binghamton.
The Fightins were unable to respond in the bottom of the ninth, falling to the Rumble Ponies 6-3.
Stuart (1-0) earned the win for Binghamton after five strong frames, with Abel (2-4) suffering the loss for Reading.
Reading and Binghamton return to the field Friday night at 7 p.m. RHP Griff McGarry is scheduled to start for Reading and RHP Luis Moreno is slated to start for Binghamton. Friday features postgame fireworks and also includes an appearance from Wrestling Hall of Famer Charles Wright. Saturday is Star Wars Night and postgame will feature Carpenter MEGA Blast Fireworks, the largest fireworks show in stadium history. On Sunday, the first 1,500 kids will receive an Aaron Nola Bobble Head.
