Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (7-5-1-1) broke open a 2-0 game with five third period goals en route to a 7-1 road win over the Calgary Hitmen (4-6-0-1) Tuesday. It was the third game of the team's nine-game road trip.
Jason Trott had two of Portland's goals tonight, doubling his season total and equaling his output from last season.
The Winterhawks struck first with under a minute to go in the first period when Seth Swenson scored his first goal of the season to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Portland netminder Mac Carruth was outstanding in the first, stopping all 18 shots he faced to preserve the lead going into the second.
Portland extended the lead to 2-0 at the 3:31 mark of the second period on a goal by Trott, his third of the season, a lead they would take into the third.
From there the Winterhawks opened the third with two goals in the first 1:18 of the period. Taylor Leier struck first 51 seconds into the frame, followed 27 seconds later by a goal from Brendan Leipsic as Portland jumped out to a 4-0 lead. After Leipsic's goal the Hitmen made a goaltending change, replacing starter Chris Driedger with Brandon Glover.
Portland made it 5-0 at the 8:48 mark of the second on a power play goal by Brad Ross, his eighth of the season. Calgary got on the board at the 12:48 mark with a power play goal of their own from Victor Rask to cut Portland's lead to 5-1.
But the Winterhawks slammed the door from there, as Trott scored his second of the night at the 18:44 mark, followed by defenseman William Wrenn's first of the season with just eight seconds to go to give Portland the 7-1 win.
Trott finished with two goals and one assist for three points, while his linemate Swenson finished with a goal and an assist. Wrenn also finished with two points on a goal and one assist.
Carruth was outstanding throughout the game, blanking Calgary until midway through the third period, finishing with 36 saves on 37 Calgary shots. Driedger made 24 saves on 28 shots before being replaced, with Glover adding five saves on eight shots.
The Hawks were 2-6 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks are back on the ice tomorrow night when they take on the Medicine Hat Tigers at 6 p.m.
