Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power knocked off the Savannah Sand Gnats 9-4 at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. The Power plated eight runs on eight hits in the second to take control in their second straight win against the Sand Gnats.
Savannah took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Dustin Lawley hit a leadoff home run and Gregory Pron singled in Brian Harrison.
West Virginia answered quickly in the second. Sand Gnats starter Domingo Tapia walked Chris Lashmet and surrendered a double to Dan Gamache before Willy Garcia drove in both to tie the game. Junior Sosa followed with a base hit that allowed Garcia to score and give the Power a 3-2 lead. Eight more batters came to the plate in the inning and five scored to build an 8-2 advantage.
After the Sand Gnats got a third inning home run from TJ Rivera to cut into the deficit, Garcia hit his second home run of the season to regain a six run lead. Savannah tallied the game's last run of Power starting pitcher Zack Dodson in the sixth and could not gain any further ground against reliever Orlando Castro over the remainder of the game.
Dodson (1-1) pitched five plus innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, and earned his first win of 2012. Castro struck out six over four shutout innings of relief to earned his first save of the year. Tapia took the loss after surrendering eight runs, all earned, on eight hits over and inning and a third.
Four West Virginia players had two hits each while Alen Hanson reached on one hit to extend his hitting streak to a league-best 16 straight games. Garcia led all players with three runs batted in.
The Power and Sand Gnats close this series on Friday at 7:05 pm. West Virginia will send Nick Kingham to the mound against Savannah's Tyler Pill. The night will also feature a Charleston Charlies reunion celebration with special guest appearances by several notable former players including Dave Parker, Steve Blass, and Kent Tekulve.
