Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (11-9) scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to a 5-1 win over the Greenville Drive on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The combination of Parker Bridwell and Jake Cowan held the Shorebirds to just three hits in the game.
The Shorebirds exploded for four runs in the first inning. Glynn Davis hit a double down the right field line to start the first. John Ruettiger followed with an infield single to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Brenden Webb followed with a walk to load the bases. Then, Gabriel Lino lined a single to left field to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Nicky Delmonico hit an infield single to second to score Webb. Later in the inning, Greenville catcher Blake Swihart threw wild to first to try to pickoff Connor Narron, allowing Delmonico to score from second.
The Shorebirds rode the pitching the rest of the night. Parker Bridwell (2-0) allowed just two hits over a season best six innings. He retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced and didn't allow a hit after the first batter in the second. Bridwell retired the side in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Drive scored their lone run in the seventh against Jake Cowan. Henry Ramos drew a walk. Two batters later, Bryan Johns walked. After a passed ball, Nick Natoli lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to trim the deficit to 4-1.
The Shorebirds tacked on a run in the seventh. Nicky Delmonico ripped a one out single to right field. Mikey Planeta followed with a double through the right-center field gap to give the Shorebirds a 5-1 lead.
Jake Cowan did not allow a run over his final two innings on the mound to pick up his second save of the season.
The Shorebirds play the series finale on Friday night at 7:05pm. RHP Tyler Wilson is the scheduled starter.
