Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers tied their biggest inning of the season, scoring seven times in the bottom of the second, en route to a 12-5 victory over the Newark Bears in front of 5,054 Monday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the win, the Barnstormers snapped a four-game skid and remained one-half game ahead of York in the Freedom Division.
Reggie Taylor led off the second off Matt Smith (6-9) with a single over the head of second baseman Pablo Ozuna. Joe Gaetti grounded a single through the left side to add a second runner. Smith fielded a bunt by Octavio Martinez and cut down Taylor at third for the first out but walked Vic Gutierrez to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Lloyd Turner produced the first run, and Bryant Nelson's single up the middle knocked in Martinez for a 2-0 lead. Michael Woods walked to reload the bags. Gutierrez scored when Smith fired a pitch out of the reach of catcher Manny Mejia. Jason Perry built the lead to 5-0 with a two-run single to right center, and Aaron Herr capped the inning with a homer to right, his 12th of the season.
Newark chipped back on an RBI single up the middle by Kennard Jones in the third and a leadoff home run by Carl Everett in the fifth. Lancaster again brought the lead to seven in the bottom of the fifth. Gaetti was nailed by a pitch and took second on a one-out single to left by Gutierrez. Turner laced a two-run double into the right field corner for the 9-2 advantage.
The Bears put up their last big fight in the sixth. With one out, Elijah Dukes belted a double to dead center, and Daryle Ward walked. Brian Barton picked up one run with a single to right field to cut the lead to 9-3. Another came across as Everett lifted a fly ball down the right field line that was jarred loose from Perry's glove as he hit the ground on a dive. At that point, Jose Sanchez (3-8) was pulled by Tom Herr in favor of Pat Overholt who retired the next two batters with one more run crossing the plate.
Lancaster's pen held tight, allowing just one hit in the final 3 2/3 innings to nail down the win. Five walks and a two-run bloop single by Martinez in the bottom of the eighth iced the game.
The Barnstormers will host Newark again on Tuesday evening. Ben Fritz (2-6) gets the nod for Lancaster against lefty Kelvin Villa (1-5) at 7:00.
