Lancaster Stormers News Release

LANCASTER, Pa.-The Lancaster Barnstormers have signed former Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers left-handed starting pitcher John Koronka, it was announced today.

Koronka made his Major League debut for the Cubs on June 1, 2005, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers, 9-5. He made only three more appearances that season but returned to the big leagues with Texas the following year. He went 7-7 with a 5.69 ERA for the Rangers in 2006 but was credited with nine quality starts over the course of the season and won four consecutive decisions, April 12-May 8. He worked eight or more innings three times, all against American League East opponents.

The Clearwater, Florida native also spent time with the Rangers in 2007 and made two starts for the Florida Marlins in 2009. He has a career 8-13 record in 31 Major League games.

Koronka, 30, signed as the 12th round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in 1998. He was traded to the Cubs for left-hander Phil Norton (a former Barnstormer) in 2003 and moved to the Rangers as a part of a three-way deal that also involved the Oakland Athletics prior to the 2006 season.

Since then, Koronka has been with Cleveland, Colorado and the Marlins and was with the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this season. He also made three starts in 2008 for the Orix Blue Wave in the Japanese Pacific League.

With the Dodgers minor league system this season, he was 0-4 in eight starts at the Class AA and AAA levels.

"John is an experienced left-hander who has been to the big leagues," said manager Tom Herr. "I think he can really help us in the second half."

To make room on the roster, the Barnstormers placed first baseman Ryan Mulhern on the disabled list. Mulhern has not played since July 13 with a strained oblique muscle.

The Lancaster Barnstormers are in their sixth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
