Ducks Power Past Pats

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 26, 2010) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-2 on Monday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,015 at Suffolk County Sports Park.

The Ducks tacked on the game's first run in the second inning against Patriots' starter Jason Monti. Matt Cavagnaro's RBI single drove home Robinson Cancel to put the hosts ahead 1-0. Somerset tied the game in the fourth on Josh Pressley's RBI single to center off Ducks' starter Randy Leek.

John Rodriguez put Long Island back in front in the sixth with a solo home run over the right field wall, giving the Ducks a 2-1 advantage. The Pats quickly tied the score in the bottom of the frame courtesy of Pete LaForest's RBI single to right.

The Flock flexed their muscles again in the eighthwhen they took the lead for good against Patriots' reliever Carlos Hines. Ray Navarrete's opposite field solo homer and Javier Colina's two-run dinger to left pushed the Ducks ahead 5-2.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Leek went seven innings, allowing just five hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Monti worked five innings, surrendering five hits and one run while striking out four.

Bill Simas (1-0) picked up the victory, tossing aperfect eighth inning. Hines (2-1) was saddled with the loss, yielding three runs on two hits in his two-thirds of an inning of relief. Ricardo Gomez threw a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Navarrete, Cancel, and Cavagnaro led the Ducks at the plate with two hits each.

The Ducks and Patriots continue their four-game series on Tuesday night. Game time is set for 7:05 PM, with the Suffolk County Sports Park gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Patriotic Baseballs, courtesy of the Salvation Army. Kyle Jackson takes the mound for the Ducks against Somerset's Jonathan Ellis.
