Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
SALEM, VA - Wilfredo Boscan surrendered three consecutive home runs as part of a six-run Salem third, and the Red Sox clinched a series victory in the likely final 2011 meeting between themselves and the Pelicans in Virginia with an 8-3 Wednesday win at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
The Pelicans led 1-0 against Anthony Ranaudo and the Red Sox after two first-inning singles and a stolen base resulted in Jared Prince plating Ryan Strausborger with one gone in the game's opening frame, and Myrtle Beach wouldn't see the top side the rest of the evening.
Boscan surrendered seven straight hits to open the third, five of them for extra bases, and after Salem tied the game at one on Peter Hissey's RBI single scoring Shannon Wilkerson, Kolbrin Vitek lifted the first of three straight homers out to left field to break the game open. Bryce Brentz and Miles Head followed with solo shots to put the Red Sox out in front 6-1.
After suffering through arguably his worst inning of the year, Boscan (4-11) departed with just three innings under his belt. The right-hander saw his ERA spike from 3.92 to 4.31 with the defeat, taking all six runs earned on nine hits over three innings.
Myrtle Beach got a run back in the fourth on a Zach Zaneski RBI single scoring prince after the outfielder's one-out double, but Salem reinstated its five-run advantage with Hissey and Vitek going single-double to open the inning's bottom half.
Ranaudo (4-5) pitched five effective innings for the victory, striking out five without a walk. Manny Rivera (S, 1) worked four innings of one-run ball for the save.
After the Red Sox added one in the seventh, the Pelicans got a meaningless run in the ninth to put the game at its final margin. Myrtle Beach finishes its seven-game road trip at 3-4 with the loss. The Red Sox visit BB&T Coastal Field for the two clubs' final regular season series of the year coming up September 3-5. Myrtle Beach is 6-1 against the Red Sox this year on the Grand Strand.
Thursday night, the Pelicans open a big Southern Division series at BB&T Coastal Field against the Kinston Indians. Myrtle Beach will enter the four-game set in third place in the division's second-half standings, three and a half games back of the K-Tribe. First pitch for the series opener on a Thirsty Thursday at BB&T Coastal Field is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
