Frederick Keys News Release

The Keys completed a three-game sweep of the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Wednesday night with a 4-1 victory. Frederick finished up their week-long homestand with a 6-1 record. On the night, RHP Scott Copeland improved to 3-0 in just three starts with the Keys.

Frederick struck first on Wednesday when LF Kipp Schutz led off the second inning with a towering blast down the right field line off RHP Tyler Sample. Schutz's seventh homer as a Key remained the lone run on the board until the fifth inning.

With two on and two down in the bottom of the fifth, 2B Jonathan Schoop lined a single into centerfield. CF Yem Prades was unable to come up with the ball cleanly as 1B Michael Flacco scored easily from second. After five frames, the Keys led Wilmington, 2-0.

Through his first five innings of work, Scott Copeland had scattered three hits and did not allow a run. In the sixth, however, the Blue Rocks began to threaten. Following a Yem Prades strikeout, DH Carlo Testa reached on an infield single. RF Nick Van Stratten proceeded Testa with a double down the left field line. With two men in scoring position, Copeland fell behind 3B John Whittleman 3-0 and decided to send Whittleman to first via an intentional walk. With the bases loaded, Orlando Gomez called on RHP Randy Henry to enter the game. The first batter Henry faced was 1B Ryan Stovall. Stovall hit a sac fly to center that scored Testa from third and cut the Blue Rocks deficit in half. Now with two outs and two men in scoring position, Henry struck out LF Tim Ferguson to end the inning.

Wilmington failed to reach base in the final three innings of the contest as Henry and Jason Gurka slammed the door shut on the Blue Rocks.

The Keys added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings as Frederick prevailed 4-1.

Scott Copeland picked up the win on the night while Jason Gurka notched his first Carolina League save.

Frederick hits the road on Thursday as they head to Lynchburg, VA for a four-game series against the Hillcats. RHP Ryohei Tanaka (8-4, 3.54) will take the hill for the Keys in game one while Lynchburg will turn to LHP Dimasther Delgado (8-6, 3.87). First pitch from City Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
