THE HILLCATS: Tuesday, the 'Cats beat the Winston-Salem Dash 11-5...After being held to scoreless through their first 11 chances yesterday, the Hillcats drew first blood with a four-run first inning and led the whole way...Andrelton Simmons and Phil Gosselin both had three hits, while the team compiled 14 on the night...RHP Caleb Brewer made his advnaced-A debut, lasting just four and two-thirds innings, and did not qualify for the win...The Hillcats are currently in third place in the Northern Division at 21-30, 11.0 games back of the Frederick Keys in first place...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: The Hillcats are 5-11 against the Dash this season...Lynchburg is just 2-7 while visiting BB&T Ballpark...The 'Cats beat the Dash in their first game in Winston-Salem back on May 5, but had lost the last seven straight meetings at BB&T until last night's 11-5 win...Winston-Salem took the season series 16-4 against the Hillcats in 2010...However, the Hill-City has welcomed a new affiliate in the Atlanta Braves this year...Last season the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (2010 Braves Advance-A affiliate) nearly split the season series with the Dash taking nine games of 20...
STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: Lynchburg snapped a three-game losing streak last night...They are still six games back of a playoff spot, chasing the Potomac Nationals in the Northern Division...The Hillcats have 18 games left this season to the Nationals 19 games...The 'Cats had a game canceled last weekend, so there barring any more weather, there will be no tie...The two teams still have four head-to-head match-ups left...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Eight members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Atlanta Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes C Christian Bethancourt (12), SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...
CLUTCH PEFORMER: RHP Eliecer Cardenas went a season high four and one-third innings last night in relief, allowing just one earned run...It was his first earned run allowed since June 23rd...He had made 15 consecutive appearances without an earned run, tossing 19.2 innings in that span...He entered the game in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and two outs and went on to finish the game...It was the first time he had seen action in as early as the fifth inning this year...Cardenas' previous season high was two and one-third innings...
GET'EM ON: OF L.V. Ware went 2-for-5 last night...He's now reached base in 14 consecutive contests...In that span he is hitting ..326 (15-for-46) with three doubles, two triples, and two home runs...He's also been walked five times and hit twice...The last time he didn't reach base was in the second game of a double header July 27 where he only came up twice...Snapped a four-game hit-streak that day...
GET'EM IN: INF Joe Leonard went 1-for-5, with three RBI last night...He's now driven in 19 runs over his last 17 games...That makes up 35 percent of his RBI total on the season thus far in about 18 percent of his total games...He has two four-RBI game in that stretch...He's driven in a run in seven of his last 10 games...
WILEY WATCH: OF Keenan Wiley was called up from Low-A Rome on April 25th...He played in his 87th game with the Hillcats last night, going 1-for-5 with an RBI...He is hitting .288 on the year...That mark would be good for third in the Carolina League but Wiley is still just a fraction of a plate appearances short of qualifying...He'll need 50 plate appearances over the last 18 games of the season, an average of 2.78 PA/G to meet the season qualification mark...Short term, he needs just 9 plate appearances in the next three games to qualify...
CATNIPS: INF Joey Terdoslavich hit his 47th double of the season last night...He has already set a new Lynchburg record and is just four behind the all-time Carolina League mark...The Hillcats stole a season-high six bases Thursday night against the Blue Rocks, with six different players...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Matt Wickswat was signed by the White Sox as a non-drafted free agent July 9, 2008 after attending Santa Clara University...In 2010, ranked fifth among all White Sox minor leaguers with 116 strikeouts split between Kannapolis and Winston-Salem...In 2009, led the Pioneer League in ERA (3.84) and strikeouts (91)...Made three appearances for AA Birmingham this season...Spent most of season in bullpen, but began to start in July...Won Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 4-10...Started against Lynchburg on July 14...Gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings pitched in a win...Has made two relief appearances against Lynchburg...Has pitched a combined five and one-third shutout innings, giving up five hits and striking out four...Currently 5-3 with a 4.02 ERA in 19 games...
