Big Inning Shapes Loss

Wichita, KS - The Sioux Falls Canaries (4-3) suffered a 9-7 loss to the Wichita Wingnuts (3-6) in a game marked by a long rain delay and several big innings.

The Wingnuts jumped ahead with a two-out rally in the second inning. With two outs, Patrick Brooks singled and Brenan Herrera walked to put two men on base. Josh Horn followed with a single to score Brooks for a 1-0 lead. Nick Blasi singled to plate Herrera for a 2-0 advantage. Dustan Mohr brought home Horn with a base hit to make it 3-0. Kelly Hunt brought in Blasi and Mohr with a two-run single to cap the rally and put Wichita ahead, 5-0.

The Canaries got one back in the third inning. Joe Anthonsen singled and scored from first on a double by Cody Haerther. The run put the Birds on the scoreboard, trailing 5-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the game was stopped by rain. The delay lasted one hour and 23 minutes. The Canaries scored the first run following the delay. In the top of the fifth inning, Joe Dempsey singled and stole second base to get in scoring position. Dempsey scored on a single by Haerther. At the midpoint of the game the Canaries trailed, 5-2.

Wichita added to their lead in the sixth inning. Mike Thompson singled to break up a string of six in a row sat down by Angelo Morales following the resumption of the game. Herrera tripled to score Thompson for a 6-2 lead.

The Birds again in the eighth inning. Haerther opened the inning with a home run. The solo shot cut the Wichita lead to three runs, 6-3.

Wichita pulled away with three runs in the bottom of the eight. Thompson, Herrera, and Horn each drove in runs as the Wingnuts got in front by six, 9-3.

The eighth inning runs would prove important as the Canaries mounted a rally in the ninth. Ken Lup and Tim Hutting singled, while Haerther drew a walk to load the bases. Cory Harris then delivered his seventh home run of the season, a grand slam, and the Canaries were within two, 9-7. Wichita immediately went to the bullpen to bring in closer Joe D'Alessandro, who struck out Trevor Lawhorn to end the game.

The Canaries and Wingnuts continue the four-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. for a series opener with the Sioux City Explorers. The game will be DAV Night featuring a Team Card Set Giveaway and Friday Night Fireworks presented by Sanford Health.
