St. Paul Saints News Release
FORT WORTH, TX (July 14, 2009) - After spending a college career in the air conditioned Metrodome, Tom Buske didn't allow the triple digit heat at LaGrave Field get to him as he outdueled Fort Worth Cats starter Ryan Riddle as the St. Paul Saints got a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night.
For the second consecutive start Buske baffled one of the leagues best hitting teams and didn't give up his first hit until two were out in the fourth. From the fifth through eighth Buske allowed the lead off man on in each inning and it wasn't until the single in the eighth that he was finally chased from the game. The biggest trouble he got into was in the seventh when he gave up back-to-back singles to Patrick O'Sullivan and Ryan Patterson. Buske got a double play off the bat of Kelley Gulledge and got Isa Garcia to line out to left to end the inning. Buske went 7.0 shutout innings allowing four hits while walking three and striking out two picking up his second win of the season. The bullpen did the rest.
In the eighth after Buske gave up the lead off single to Chuck Carter reliever Mike Bille got into a little trouble. With one out he walked the bases loaded, but his defense helped him out against John Allen. Allen hit a sinking liner to left that Andrew Schmiesing made a diving catch on and doubled up Cameron Blair at second.
The Saints got all the runs they needed in the first off of Riddle. With one out Josh Alley reached second on a two base throwing error by Riddle. Two batters later he scored on Jason Cooper's single to make it 1-0.
Cooper came through again in the third when Alex Fonseca led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Cooper's single.
In the fourth back-to-back walks to Scott Knazek and Steve Butler allowed Schmiesing to drive in a run with a single to center.
Fonseca finished the scoring with a solo homer to left in the seventh, his first of the year.
The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at LaGrave Field. The Saints send RHP Mitch Wylie (5-4, 4.80) to the mound against Cats RHP Jae Jung (3-1, 2.21). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
