Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Will Vasquez capped off a seven-run third inning with a grand slam that lifted Salem to a 9-5 victory over Winston-Salem on Wednesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Vasquez notched three hits and five RBI to lead the Red Sox into a first place tie with the Dash in the Southern Division.
Salem broke the scoreless game wide open with a seven-run third inning against Miguel Socolovich. Brad Correll, Mike Jones and Zach Borowiak connected on RBI singles as the Red Sox tallied six hits in and sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame. Vasquez finished off the offensive onslaught when he launched a grand slam over the left field wall to hand Salem an early 7-0 lead.
Socolovich (3-4), who is a regular out of the bullpen and was making just his fourth start, only lasted 2.1 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits to suffer the loss.
The Dash put their first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Seth Loman led off with a solo shot. It was his 14th home run of the season. Winston-Salem added a pair of runs in the sixth when Justin Greene was hit by a pitch and Logan Johnson singled for one of his three hits on the night. With two outs, Joe Persichina smacked a two-run double into deep right field that trimmed the Dash deficit to 7-3.
A wild pitch brought another run home for Salem in the top of the seventh and Vasquez struck again with an RBI double to extend the Red Sox lead to 9-3. The Dash added a run in the bottom of the inning when Justin Greene drew a bases-loaded walk and tacked on another when Greg Paiml lined an RBI single in the eighth.
Salem starting pitcher Stephen Fife (3-2) was the beneficiary of the offensive support as he collected the win. He held the Dash to three runs on six hits in six innings.
The Dash and Red Sox conclude this four-game series on Thursday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. It will also be the final meeting between these two teams during the regular season. Winston-Salem will hand the ball to RHP Dylan Axelrod (2-1, 1.21) while Salem is expected to start RHP Seth Garrison (8-11, 3.67). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Winston-Salem Dash has teamed up with the Second Harvest Food Bank to strike out hunger on Thursday, September 3 when they host the Salem Red Sox at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
