Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(York, PA.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (16-26) fell in game two against the York Revolution (22-21) 8-2, behind a five-run fifth inning.
After a scoreless first inning, both teams got on the board in the second. Frank Martinez opened the scoring with a solo homerun, his 10th long ball of the season. York responded in the bottom half of the inning, rallying with two outs. Travis Witherspoon singled, then stole second to get into scoring position. Roger Diaz then singled to bring him home, evening things at 1-1.
Both pitchers settled in for two innings, keeping things tied up heading to the fifth. York's offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth, starting with a single from Steven Figueroa. Figueroa stole second, then came around to score on a single from Jared Mitchell. That was followed by a hit-by-pitch and then a three-run homerun from Melky Mesa. Telvin Nash added a solo shot after that, finishing off the five-run inning.
Witherspoon led off the next inning with a triple, then scoring on a groundout to second. Cory Vaughn led off the next inning with a double for Southern Maryland, as they looked to battle back. Angelys Nina then singled to move up to Vaughn to third, where he would score on a groundout to make the score 7-2.
York added another in the bottom of the seventh, as pinch-runner Henry Castillo scored on a pair of wild pitches. After a scoreless eighth, the Revolution sent James Pugliese to the mound to shut the door. The reliever worked a perfect inning, finishing off the 8-2 win for York.
The Blue Crabs return to action Sunday, August 26th for the series finale against the Revolution. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. on Sunday at PeoplesBank Ballpark.
