New Britain Bees News Release
(Sugar Land, TX) - The New Britain Bees (22-20, 55-50) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (28-14, 69-36) 8-3 at Constellation Field on Friday evening in the opener of a three-game weekend series in the Lone Star State. New Britain gets back to five games over .500 for the second time in 2018, matching their high watermark of the season, having last accomplished the feat on August 2nd as part of a 4-3 triumph over the Somerset Patriots at TD Bank Ballpark.
New Britain starting pitcher Mark Hamburger (10-8) was victorious for the fourth time in as many starts, allowing just two runs on six hits in seven innings on the bump, walking and striking out a pair. The right-hander is now tied for second with Nate Reed of the Lancaster Barnstormers in the Atlantic League of Professional with ten wins and recorded his team-leading 11th quality start overall. Sugar Land starting pitcher Yasutomo Kubo (3-1) suffered the loss, surrendering seven runs on nine hits (one home run) across six innings of work, walking four and striking out three.
New Britain took a 2-0 lead versus Kubo in the top half of the third inning when Deibinson Romero cracked a two-run home run to left centerfield, his team-best 15th big fly of the campaign. With the score tied at two in the top of the fourth, the visitors plated three more runs for a 5-2 advantage by way of a Jonathan Galvez run-scoring double just over the third base bag and into the left field corner and a two RBI base knock from Romero, giving him four rib-eye steaks on the night. The Bees added a pair of tack-on runs in the top of the sixth for a 7-2 cushion as Darren Ford plated Vinny Siena with an opposite-field double to right with James Skelton following Ford with a run-scoring single. The boys from the Hardware City closed out the scoring in the ninth by jumping ahead 8-3 thanks to a double into the gap in left centerfield off the bat of Jamar Walton that allowed Jason Rogers to cross the plate. The offensive support was more than enough for Hamburger as he helped out his own cause by starting two separate 1-6-3 double plays, part of three twin-killings overall defensively behind the hurler as New Britain was able to win for the first time in seven tries this season on Sugar Land's home field. The Bees return to New Britain Stadium on Tuesday, August 28th when they welcome in the reigning Atlantic League of Profession Baseball Champion York Revolution for a three-game midweek series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. It will be another Two-Fer Tuesday in the Hardware City, as fans can buy one regular priced ticket and get one FREE when purchasing online, by phone, or at the Bees Box Office.
