
Big inning boosts surging Suns

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. â The Suns finished their first winning road trip in more than a year, holding onto an early lead, beating the Huntsville Stars, 7-4, in front of 2,886 schoolchildren Wednesday morning at Joe W. Davis Stadium.
Joel Guzman's two-run home run gave the Suns a 7-0 lead in a five-run fourth inning against Stars starter and losing pitcher Khalid Ballouli (2-3). Guzman and Jon Weber each drove in three runs. Weber drilled two doubles, hitting safely in his first three plate appearances. Todd Donovan, mired in a 3-for-31 skid, had three hits, including an RBI double.
Suns starting pitcher Chad Billingsley (3-2) became the Suns' first starter to three wins, pitching six innings and giving up two runs, both coming in the sixth. He also went 2-for-3 with two singles.
Stars relievers David Bradley and Mitch Stetter combined to shut out the Suns on two singles over the final 5-1/3 innings.
The Suns' bullpen had delivered 13.2 consecutive shutout innings until Luis Gonzalez gave up a two-out, two-run triple to Kennard Bibbs in the ninth inning.
After an off-day Thursday, left-hander Derek Thompson (0-1, 4.04 ERA) is scheduled to face Mississippi left-hander Chuck James (0-0, 1.93) at 7:05 p.m. Friday as the Suns (19-21) face the Braves (16-23) in the first game of a three-game homestand at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
SUNS SPOTS: The Suns went 4-2 on the road trip, their first winning roadie since April 16-22, 2004. It was the best winning percentage on a road swing since August 8-11, 2003, when the Suns took three of four in Greenville. ...Tydus Meadows, who is batting 16-for-31 (.516) with three home runs, 11 RBI and eight doubles during his nine-game hitting streak had a routine day off. ...3B Brian Sprout broke a 1-for-30 streak with a lined single to left field in the fourth inning. ... The Suns failed to score with the bases loaded with none out in the third inning.
